EECC UHF Tag Performance Survey
UTPS Edition 2009 – with special: On-Metal transponder

In the „UHF Tag Performance Survey 2009“ (UTPS) EECC measured the performance of the most recent transponders. 30 UHF transponders and 10 On-Metal tags, which comply with Class1 Gen2 communication standard from EPCglobal and the ISO standard 18000-6C, were tested. The goal of the study was to make transparent to the customer which transponder fits best for his application.
A new chapter has been dedicated to RF unfriendly metallic surfaces. Therefore 10 UHF On-Metal transponders were tested additionally.
The read range of a transponder is the most important criteria to decide whether RFID fits in a specific application or not. For all non-metallic and non-aqueous materials the read range was determined with the “permittivity”-method introduced in 2008, i.e. by means of the dielectric characteristics (permittivity) of these materials the read range can be easily estimated using the graphs of this study, showing that for each surface a suitable transponder can be found.

UTPS Edition 2008 – The right transponder for every application

The new edition of the UHF Tag Performance Survey (UTPS) examines the performance capability of of a wide range of UHF transponders currently available on the market. These investigations enable companies to determine the transponder types best suited to their specific requirements. For the first time ever, the UTPS examined transponder performance on random, freely selectable subsurfaces. Using a number of reference materials with unique characteristics, a model was created for all materials demonstrating the performance. As in the preceding version of the UTPS, the transponders were also tested and evaluated with regard to orientation to the reader.
The survey enables users to estimate the transponder performance ranges on various materials. Anyone who knows the parameters for any given subsurface material can use it to determine the read range for any transponder in the official frequencies for Europe, Japan and the USA.

UTPS Edition 2007 – Transponder face up to endurance test

The 2007 published edition of the UHF Tag Performance Survey provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the influence that various materials can have on the operating efficiency of 20 different UHF RFID transponders designed to comply with EPCglobal’s C1G2 communication protocol and the ISO standard 18000-6C. An exceptional feature of the present study is that it includes, for the first time, transponders with four different chips in the measuring range between 800 and 1,000 MHz. In all tests, the EECC’s state-of-the-art measuring system was an essential prerequisite, enabling reliable, reader-independent measurements in an unechoic chamber.
The survey looked at the most significant factors that influence the operating efficiency of transponders. These include the transponder’s read range, reliability, and applicability on various materials. Correspondingly, transponders were tested initially unattached, then on a 2 mm layer of Teflon, on a 10 mm layer of Teflon, on a PET water bottle and finally on a metal surface.
